OpenCCG How To
Become A Referee
Written By Josh Tordsen
Becoming a sanctioned referee is fairly simple.  Your player's group appoints you as referee.

But what do you need to know?  What do you have to do?  The list is surprisingly short.

1. Know the game or games your group plays.
This means showing up and playing games, reading the rules to the game, and trusting your judgement when making rulings.  If you are unsure how to rule, use your best judgement at the time.  You can double-check the ruling in the rules, cards, another referee, or contact OpenCCG referee support for clarification.

2. Rule fairly.
If it makes sense, ruling that way is probably right.  If you have an ambiguous card or rule, deal with it the best way you can.  Draw on your experiences to try and make an equitable ruling.

3. Remember, your word is law
When you rule, it is the law.  Players are not allowed to appeal a decision or get a second opinion during a tournament.  Your group's regular game rules may differ.

Referee Guidelines are written into each charter to give authority to the referees.
